RSS is a very powerful source to be reckoned with and it is a growing standard for syndication Internet’s top web sites. RSS Auto-Discovery is nothing new, but is really growing in importance!
There are many ways to utilize the power of your web site’s RSS Feeds so we wanted to discuss one method that many webmasters totally miss out on. This is “RSS Auto-Discover” and it is a great way to boost your web site’s syndication and overall exposure to the internet world. Don’t worry if you don’t know what this is, we are going to explain what rss auto-discovery is and how to implement it on your site in this article.
What Is RSS Auto-Discovery?
Auto-discovery allows people with certain RSS readers to automatically detect that an RSS feed exists for the content contained on the webpage.
If you’re an avid RSS user, you get the power of this already.
Just in case you’re not, lemme spell it out for ya…. Thanks to Yahoo, people won’t even have to go to your site to add you to their Yahoo page, if you have the right Meta Tag in your site’s header. The yahoo search engine actually shows your rss feed with a nice little RSS Logo right from the Yahoo! Search if you have the yahoo toolbar installed.
And if they don’t use the My Yahoo page to track their feeds or the Yahoo toolbar? They’ve been kind enough to include a link to your XML link as well.
How do I know this works?
Here’s what it looks like:
< !– RSS Autodiscovery — >
< link rel=”alternate” type=”application/rss+xml” title=”RSS” href=”http://rss30.com/feed/rss/”>
All you need to do to implement this on your own web site, is to replace my RSS feed link with your own, and add the tag to the header of your site. If you are using wordpress, you will need to go to the appearance tab and choose editor to do this. If you are using other html editors, just view the source of the main page or the page that includes your sites header in most cases.
Turning on this rss autodiscovery will really help boost your sites exposure and hopefully your RSS Feed Subscribers!
Also most browsers these days will show a little RSS Icon in the top of the browser, in most cases right inside the address bar. These are ways that the newer technology rewards those of us who offer RSS syndicated web site content. There are always newer and better ways to get your site discovered by newer readers and get more website traffic from your online efforts and that is why we are here!
So just a quick rss tip for you, add the code to your site today and start seeing your rss feed showing up in more search engines, more browsers and on more users desktop today.
